Food is Medicine: A Superfood Rich Recipe for your G-Tube Fed Child

Don’t forget about Superfoods

Sometimes when you become a special needs parent, food in a sense goes “out the window”. Many times in our lives, we forget the nutritional benefit of a wide variety of foods. We forget that food is indeed part of our medicine.

For g-tube babies, I’ve found this can be even more the case. With so few fresh, real food formulas out there, it can be difficult to feed our children the Superfoods that feed the brain.

In this recipe, I’ve tried to pack superfoods in it – calling it “Superfood Deluxe” to remind myself that food is indeed part of Paige’s treatment.

Superfoods Included

  • Spinach: a Vitamin powerhouse! Vitamin A,K, C, and B6 plus Iron, magnesium and more
  • Squash: Contains vitamins A, B1, B6, and C, as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, copper, selenium, and manganese. Who needs over the counter vitamins when you have squash??
  • Sourdough Bread: fermentation is always a good way of providing probiotics to the body, and it creates a gentle way for wheat to be absorbed in the body because of lactic acid, which can be crucial for our g-tube babies
  • Goji Berries: Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin. We don’t often include berries like this in our diet, but we should!
  • Hemp hearts: These little seeds so often go unnoticed. They are rich in antioxidants and can be great for cardiovascular and digestive health, as well as anti-inflammatory properties
