“Happy” Mothers Day
“Happy” mothers day, we say –
Jolly and sincere,
To all the women who look the part,
Who all have a baby in tow.
A thing we say to bring a smile,
To appreciate our mothers – to show them we see.
Yet we don’t realize,
So often we don’t.
Mother’s Day, for some,
Is the time they grieve their darling child –
A death that tore their heart and soul away.
A distraught day for others,
For those who haven’t even become one.
A day attached to IVs, hormones, drugs –
An implanted uterus, or maybe a sperm donor –
An open box of tests, all with only one line.
Mother’s Day for them, is such a toil.
The new mother, the one suffering with depression or deprivation –
The guilt she feels when she doesn’t want to wake up,
Or the frustration when she can’t console her child.
The freedom she once had, is a freedom gone forever.
Mother’s Day for her –
All brand new and different,
With its own set of grief therein.

For others, a day filled with meds and things –
The things they never imagined.
They give up their life for their baby every day –
A life filled with impossible choices,
They’d never give away.
Let’s not make it black and white….
“Happy” is such a simple term..
We have joy, we have grief – but happiness sometimes simply does not exist,
On a “Happy” Mother’s Day.
Remember your mothers,
You may not know their grief –
But remember to have them in your heart.
Give a flower, give a hug –
No matter what kind of mother they are,
They deserve every day we can give.
