“How to explain, the instinct that washes over me.
The doctors, they come.
The nurses - they sometimes care.
But I’m the one,
Who’s Dr Mom.

I know more, I see more.
I see when she holds her breath -
I see when her eyes become tired.
The seizures? They’re sub-clinical.
But sometimes, I see those too.

Her eyes, I watch them.
Her little hands,
I watch their every move.
You say I have no training -
you’ve been in school for years.
But I held her inside me,
for ten long months -
I felt her every move.
There’s something about a mother with a baby -
She’s the smartest expert there is.
Trust yourself -
you know your baby best.
Don’t be ashamed,
to be Dr. Mom.”

A Poem of Acceptance

September 15, 2024September 15, 2024 Sylvia1

I watched the video  I saw who you used to be Your little dimples, Your little squeaks Your eyes they wondered – Your little hands grasped mine A while ago it kept me alive I laid in bed, Replaying again and again  Praying you’d keep breathing Praying I’d have you back again I watched it […]

September 8, 2024September 8, 2024 Sylvia0

Time Heals? People often say, “Time heals” or “Wait a little while, it’ll feel better” In the context of a disabled child, though, this is a really hard thing to hear because more often than not, time doesn’t heal – it just brings different sets of challenges. At first you’re dealing with the impact of […]

The Power of Silence in the Healing Process

August 25, 2024August 25, 2024 Sylvia0

There was a time when I enjoyed silence – I would lay on the floor in my college dorm and simply think. I could take a walk and enjoy myself – enjoy nature, enjoy the breeze. The silence was peaceful, and it was healing.  While my daughter was in the ICU with a new life […]

A G-Tube Recipe, But One You Can Eat Too!

August 18, 2024July 22, 2025 Sylvia1

Salmon and Green Beans One of my goals in homemaking my daughter food is to create something that I would eat too. I didn’t want to just find what she needed in one day and mix it all together, saying “Oh well she won’t taste it anyway.” I wanted to make her meals – meals […]

Special Needs and The Beauty of Going Slow

August 10, 2024August 10, 2024 Sylvia1

The other day I sat crying to my friend – I cried, telling her I feel like everyone else’s time is speeding by, and we are stuck. It sometimes feels as though Paige is where she was a year ago… she still can’t crawl, she can’t sit up, and she can’t talk. Every year that […]
